Design and Build
The second I took the Xiaomi 17T out of the packaging, the size stood out. Over the last few years, mid-rangers kept stretching toward 6.8 inches, basically forcing two-handed use just to reply to a text, but here you get a 6.59-inch screen which feels like a breath of fresh air. The phone weighs 200 grams, but because the weight is spread evenly, it never feels heavy in your pocket or wrist.
The durability package is great. You get proper IP68 water and dust resistance, so getting caught in sudden monsoon downpours or dropping it near a sink won't ruin your day. The front glass is Gorilla Glass 7i, while the rear gets a smooth glass finish in Blue, Violet, Opal White, and Black.
The big compromise? The frame. It is made of plastic rather than aluminum. I get it that the matte finish keeps hand grease away and saves a bit of weight, but a metal frame would have given it that cold, luxury touch.
Display
The screen on this phone is arguably the most capable panel you will find below six figures. It's a 1.5K AMOLED panel pushing a smooth 120Hz. While most smartphones in this segment offer 8-bit or 10-bit screens, this device features a 12-bit display capable of reproducing 68 billion colors. In multimedia use, this ensures precise color fidelity and clean, natural tonal transitions across complex dark scenes, eliminating visible banding artifacts.

Outdoor visibility holds up under direct afternoon sun. Text stays sharp, map routes are easy to follow, and camera framing never turns into a guessing game. At night, it dims down to very low levels. The 3840Hz PWM dimming did its job too; reading articles in bed with the room lights completely off never left my eyes feeling strained.
Performance and gaming
Under the hood, the Xiaomi 17T runs on MediaTek's 4nm Dimensity 8500 Ultra chip, paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and fast UFS 4.1 storage.
For daily tasks, the phone just flies. Apps open instantly, jumping between WhatsApp, browser tabs, and documents happens without lag, and apps stay held in RAM without restarting.
For mobile gamers, this silicon outperforms competing mid-range options. During our gaming runs on PUBG Mobile, it comfortably holds close to 118 frames per second without stutter. On heavier games like Genshin Impact, it stays smooth for around twenty minutes before the area near the camera warms up and the system balances speed to keep temperatures safe. The vibration motor also delivers clean, quiet clicks while typing.
Software
Out of the box, the phone runs HyperOS 3.0 based on Android 16. With 4 major OS updates and 6 years of security patches on the table, it’s refreshing to know you won’t be stuck with an outdated device anytime soon.
App animations feel smooth and navigation is fast. Full-screen banner ads inside default system menus are gone. That said, the initial boot still comes with a handful of pre-installed apps and icon folders. It took me around five minutes to uninstall the junk and clean up notification permissions, but once stripped down, the software ran without any headaches.
Camera
While most phones at this price skip real zoom lenses, the Xiaomi 17T brings serious camera hardware:

50MP Main Camera: Features optical image stabilization (OIS) to keep pictures sharp. Daylight shots show natural colors and balanced light. You can choose Leica Vibrant for colorful, ready-to-share photos or Leica Authentic for a classic, contrasty look. Night shots come out clean with low noise.
50MP 5x Periscope Telephoto: This is the best camera on the phone. Instead of fuzzy digital zoom, you get real 5x optical reach. It captures sharp distant shots and takes clean portraits with natural background blur. It also works as a macro lens, taking sharp close-ups of small objects from a comfortable distance.
12MP Ultrawide Camera: Works well for wide landscapes and group pictures in daylight, matching the main camera colors nicely.
32MP Selfie Camera: Sits inside the front hole-punch cutout and captures clean, natural skin tones for video calls and social posts.
Video Capabilities: All rear cameras shoot 4K video at 30 fps, and you can switch between them while recording. The main and 5x zoom lenses also shoot 4K at 60 fps with steady stabilization.
Sound, Security, and Connectivity
The stereo speakers get plenty loud, and voices on podcasts or YouTube sound clear, but don't expect much bass thump here. No headphone jack either, so keep your TWS handy.
The optical fingerprint reader under the glass sits a bit low, but it registers thumb taps instantly without misreads. For wireless connectivity, you get dual-SIM 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6.0, and NFC, alongside Xiaomi's IR blaster, which is always a lifesaver when the office AC remote goes missing.
Battery
You get a 6500 mAh battery here, and moving to silicon-carbon chemistry was a smart call by Xiaomi. It packs serious density without bloating the phone's profile.
Even with the display pinned to 120Hz, I routinely crossed nine hours of active screen time. A typical day of calls, camera tests, and messaging left me going to sleep with 40 to 50 percent still in the tank. Unless you spend half your afternoon gaming or running turn-by-turn navigation on 5G, two days on a charge is very realistic.
Charging is quick, too. The 67W adapter in the box took it from zero to a full tank in roughly 58 minutes. It skips wireless charging, but given how long the phone stays alive between plug-ins, that omission never bothered me.

My Final Take
The Xiaomi 17T gets the basics right without making you spend over 1 lakh.
You do miss out on a metal frame, and having to uninstall a few pre-loaded apps right out of the box is annoying. Still, the actual hardware speaks for itself. The 5x periscope lens snaps portrait shots that punch way above this price, the screen is easy on the eyes, and that massive 6500 mAh battery means you never have to think twice about finding a charger before leaving the house. If you want a phone that fits comfortably in one hand and just works without constant battery worries, this is an easy recommendation.
