Nothing Phone (4a): An Overview

Design and build

Nothing has always stood out from the crowd and the Phone (4a) keeps that going. It has the see-through back that fans love from the Phone (3a) and Phone (2a). The big new thing is the Glyph Bar. It is a strip of small LED lights near the cameras. It lights up for notifications and calls and shows your charging progress. It can even work as a camera timer. This means you get useful alerts without turning on the screen.

The phone is 8.6mm thick and weighs 204g. It feels solid in the hand. The frame is plastic but the phone is still well built. It has an IP64 rating so it can handle dust and light splashes of water. There is also a new AI button on the left side. You can use it as a quick shortcut for different actions.

Display

The 6.78-inch AMOLED screen is a nice step up from the last model. It has a 1.5K resolution so text and photos look very sharp. Colours look rich and blacks look deep. The 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling and swiping feel smooth.

It also gets very bright. The peak brightness is 4,500 nits so you can read the screen easily in strong sunlight. That helps a lot on sunny days in Nepal. The screen has Gorilla Glass 7i on top to protect it from scratches and it supports HDR10+ for better video. The in-display fingerprint sensor lets you unlock with one touch.

Performance

The phone has a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chip made on a 4nm process. It has one main core that runs up to 2.7GHz and three more strong cores to help it. Four small cores handle light tasks and save power. All this makes daily use feel quick and smooth. Social media and video streaming run without any trouble. You can also play popular games at good settings.

You can get it with 8GB or 12GB of RAM. The storage is 128GB or 256GB and it is the faster UFS 3.1 type. That means apps open quickly and files copy fast. This is a big upgrade from the UFS 2.2 storage in the last model. The phone is a good fit for students and office workers. It also suits people who like to use many apps at once. There is no memory card slot so choose a storage size that fits your needs.

Software

The phone runs Nothing OS 4.1 on Android 16. It is clean and simple to use. You will not find a lot of extra apps that you do not need. The look is fun and unique with a dot-matrix style that matches the phone’s design. Everything feels fast and easy to find.

Camera

This is where the Phone (4a) shines. It is the first base “a” series phone from Nothing to get a periscope zoom lens. At the back you get a 50MP main camera and a 50MP 3.5x periscope camera. There is also an 8MP ultra-wide camera. The zoom lens helps you take better portraits and clearer photos of faraway things. It is a big step up from the 2x zoom on the Phone (3a).

You can record videos up to 4K at 30fps. For selfies and video calls there is a 32MP front camera. It gives you sharp and clear photos.

Battery

The 5,080mAh battery is made to last a full day of normal use. That means calls and chats and videos and some gaming. When it runs low the 50W fast charging fills it up quickly. A charger does not come in the box so you will need to buy a compatible adapter.

Connectivity

• Dual SIM (Nano)
• 5G and 4G LTE
• Wi-Fi 6 (dual-band)
• Bluetooth 5.4
• GPS and NFC
• USB Type-C
